Sophie Weston is a musician interested in the meditative nature and sonic potential of the flute. Through contemporary repertoire and improvisation, her practice explores the tension between compositional intent and the materiality of the instrument, and the transcendent possibilities therein.

Sophie composed and performed the sound design for Hearth Theatre’s 2022 season of Death of a Salesman. Composing for flute and objects, Sophie’s work was described as “haunting and noirish” by Theatre People. Of this performance Australian Book Review said that “the sheer tones from composer Sophie Weston, or the repeated rasp of air passing through its reed, add a haunting resonance”.

In 2021, Sophie collaborated with Composer/Pianist Grace Ferguson to present an evocative and transporting recital of minimalist works at Tempo Rubato (Brunswick Music Festival) to a sold out audience. In 2021-22 Sophie’s collaboration with Grace Ferguson, Abbey Sundborn and Merinda Dias-Jayasinha explored how the development of musical ideas and sounding of personal objects through predetermined processes can reflect the elasticity of perception and memory.

Sophie has performed at Melbourne’s premier improvisation institution the Make It Up Club multiple times, and at the online curations of MPavillion and MIUC Online with the Isolation Improvisation Collective in 2020. Sophie performed in Glassworks at the Dots + Loops Liminality Festival at Abbotsford Convent in 2018 and In the Shape of a Square at the Meat Market as part of the 2017 Melbourne Fringe Festival. She has also appeared on recordings with contemporary artists Mystery Guest and Vilde.

In 2016 Sophie attended the 9th Summer Course for Young Flutists in Tuscany under the tutelage of Thies Roorda and Rien de Reede.  In the same year she was also selected to attend Emily Beynon's Netherlands Flute Academy as one of twelve Young International Professionals. In 2018 Sophie participated in the Australian Art Orchestra’s Creative Music Intensive.

Sophie completed her Masters of Music at the Melbourne Conservatorium in 2012 with Derek Jones.  Her Bachelor of Music was guided by Gerhard Mallon at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music.
